Ship design

Raising the bar of innovation

Our innovative spirit and highly-skilled team are the driving force in getting new designs off the ground. From first ideas to drawing table to actual implementation, we’re raising the bar on quality and value creation for our clients continuously.

Safety first

Safety is always our top priority. We don’t just adhere to regulations and the classification societies, we go above and beyond. From early in the design phase, we seek to cooperate with the classification societies, joining forces to realize safer and better vessels. Our excellent relationships with the societies also result in quick and efficient progress of all activities, as well as a quick response to new developments.

Reduction of emissions

We’re committed to developing smart, future-proof ships that genuinely contribute to the overall reduction of emissions, in particular CO2/NOx/PM10 and SO2 within our production environment, as well as meeting customer demand.

When determining the best applications for your sailing areas, we offer tailor-made solutions based on your sailing style. The additional charges for these solutions are neglectable and can be earned back within three to five years. Our Clean Ship Design integrates future-proof applications in the areas of:

  • Vessel design;
  • Materials used;
  • Propulsion installations (gas/dual fuel/hybrid/diesel/electric);
  • Other installations like the recycling of waste heat and LED lighting

Win-win flextunnel application

The innovative retractable Van der Velden Marine Systems Flex Tunnel is developed specifically for inland vessels, lowering resistance while increasing efficiency.

The tunnel ensures optimal water flow to the propellers at shallow draughts. The downsides of conventional tunnels are increases in hull resistance, lower efficiency, and increased fuel consumption. Moreover, inland ships are loaded, therefore sailing in deeper water conditions about 85 percent of the time, during which a tunnel is unnecessary. The Van der Velden® FLEX tunnel is deployed when sailing in shallow waters, ensuring sufficient water flow to the propellers and maintaining their efficiency.

Benefits of LNG

Alternative fuels play a key role in achieving emission reduction. In our designs, we’ve successfully implemented Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). The uptake of LNG technology is a rather complex process, but the rewards are more than satisfying as LNG is better for both our clients and our planet.

LNG causes substantially lower emissions of air pollutants than conventional diesel and marine gasoil. On top of that, it reduces operational fuel costs thanks to long-term price differences compared to diesel.
